Kazakhstan: Children in Central Asia practice a tradition within the iftar preparations, they go caroling Ramadan. As with Christmas carols, children go from door to door singing songs of their neighbors holiday. After performing, carolers seek treatment, usually receiving candy or pocket change. This songfest can last a whole month. It is the only time of year when they run around with their friends. In Kazakhstan, Ramadan caroling was suppressed in Soviet times, when the Kazakh Muslims fasted secretly to avoid being targeted as troublemakers. Today, carolers can sing openly, "May the Lord Almighty to accept your prayers and to those who are fasting for Ramadan, may the Lord be good to you." Carolling Ramadan was also popular throughout Afghanistan before the Soviet invasion in 1979, but the tradition has disappeared over the following decades of war and the emergence of the Taliban, who reviewed all the music to be un-Islamic. Caroling resurfaced recently in some of the Uzbek ethnic northern Afghanistan ethnic Turkmen, and Tajik ethnic neighborhoods
