Religious leaders committed to Unite against extremism
Dhaka: The leaders of the four major religions have promised to unite and promote religious harmony and fight against a sharp rise of religious extremism and militancy in Bangladesh. The commitment was made during an interfaith conference organized by the Bangladesh police in Dhaka last month. The rally was attended by about 1,500 people, mostly leaders of the Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Buddhist. The show of unity comes after a series of brutal attacks against the Liberals and progressive activists, including secular bloggers, publishers, educators and religious leaders by Islamist militants. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan said there was a "conspiracy to destroy religious harmony" in Bangladesh. "This is part of a plot to destroy a long tradition of peace and religious harmony in Bangladesh," he Khan said the interfaith gathering. Holy Cross Bishop Patrick D'Rozario of Dhaka said interfaith dialogue and efforts to strengthen harmony are essential in the fight against religious extremism. "These are difficult times and we want to meet these challenges successfully, "said a Christian leader. Muslim cleric Maulana Fariduddin Masoud said Islam does not condone violence. "The courts are responsible for judging people if they infringe, but some misguided people use violence in the name of Islam. This is un-Islamic, "said Masoud, head of Jamiat ul Ulema, who leads a signature campaign to collect signatures of 100,000 Muslim clerics to declare an anti-militancy fatwa." The rise of fundamentalism shows some weaknesses in the culture of the country of harmony, which must be repaired, "said Swami Dhruveshananda, a Hindu priest and director of the Dhaka branch of the Ramakrishna Mission. Shuddhananda Mohathero, chairman of the Buddha Kristi Prachar Sangha based in Dhaka, a religious organization and Buddhist social, echoed the call. "He who truly loves his country and religion can not resort to violent means. as religious leaders, we must make great efforts to educate others on interfaith the harmony, "said the Buddhist monk
