Khatami, Mahathir call for Shia, Sunni Unity

Dr Mahathir, a Sunni and Khatami, a Shia are both signatories of the appeal which was prepared in five languages - Arabic, Persian, English, Urdu and Malay - will be sent and distributed worldwide with the hope that it will mark the beginning to end sectarian strife between the two Muslim sects that led to the death of thousands of times to divide.

Dr Mahathir. said the appeal was not pursued to unite Sunnis and Shiites, but rather a goal pusuable asking just Sunnis and Shiites to stop killing each other.
"Muslims must accept that the enemies of Islam clapped their hands on the sectarian conflict that we are doing what they should not do more.
"Believe me, when the enemies of Islam look at us, they do not see us as Sunni or Shiite, but as Muslims.
" we must learn to live with our differences and tolerate each other. this call does not ask anyone to give up what they want to believe. We ask simply that they do not kill each other because of the different interpretations that have led to different sects, "he added .
also suggested the appeal letter to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which represents all Muslims of any sect or doctrine, to set up a working group that would examine the gap between Sunnis and Shiites in depth and present concrete proposals for political and religious leaders of the ummah to act on
