Dubai -. The Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) announced on May 4, a historic legal initiative to allow non-Muslim expatriates holding assets in Dubai, a solution for succession and inheritance rights of their family after their death, Khaleej Times.
With the introduction of new rules, the DIFC has become the first country in the Middle East where a non-Muslim individual can register a will under the common law principles internationally recognized. At present, the distribution of assets of a deceased non-Muslim expatriate is guided by the federal laws of the UAE-based Sharia law, including the law on personal status, Transactions Civil Code and Public Order .
According to the initiative, the DIFC has launched "Wills and Probate Registry" to provide non-Muslim expatriates facility to record English language wills that will allow their assets to be transferred to death according to their wishes. The registry, established in 2014, was set up under the directives of Shaikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and President of DIFC, as part of the Authority disputes resolution initiatives. Essa Kazim, Governor of DIFC, said Wills and Probate Registry DIFC is a first for the Middle East and Africa.
