Conference on Refugees in the Muslim world
Jeddah: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is organizing, in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), an international conference on "Refugees in the Muslim world "to promote and create conditions for the voluntary repatriation and sustainable reintegration of refugees to their country of origin. The conference will be held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, on 10-11 May 2012 at ministerial level with the participation of over 500 representatives from all member states of the OIC, 40 international and regional organizations, 70 NGOs, as well as observers from 21 countries including the United States, Russia, Australia and China. One of the main themes of the conference is that voluntary repatriation is the preferred durable solution to the refugee problem. This is particularly important for the OIC member states hosting the largest number of refugees in the world, about 18 million people. In Afghanistan, 3.5 million people have returned home after years of displacement in which they were hosted by countries in the region, especially Pakistan and Iran. This is the largest repatriation movement in the history of UNHCR. UNHCR provided assistance to returnees with initial reintegration in their country of origin, but more efforts are needed by development actors to address the underlying problem of poverty, to consolidate and ensure return of sustainability. In southern Sudan, following the recent political developments, there is hope more than 500,000 Sudanese refugees currently in neighboring countries and eight million IDPs can return home. The main challenge in all repatriation movements is how to ensure the sustainability of return, so that the refugee return do not feel obliged to leave their country again because of an economic, social or precarious security.
