History Minaret Umayyad Mosque Destroyed
Aleppo: The minaret of the 12th century mosque terminal in the northern Syrian city of Aleppo was destroyed last fortnight, leaving both the stone tower soaring, a pile of rubble and twisted metal scattered across the tiled courtyard. The regime of President Bashar al-Assad is blamed for the destruction of the Umayyad Mosque, which took place in the heart of the old walled city of Aleppo, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This was the second time in just over a week a historic mosque in Syria has been severely damaged. Standing inside the courtyard of the mosque, a man said regime forces fired seven shells on the minaret but failed to make it fall. According to the Associated Press, tanks shells hit their target within a few days. "We were here and suddenly shells started hitting the minaret," the man said. "They (the army) then tried to storm the mosque, but we pushed them back." Five of Syria six sites of World Heritage have been damaged in the fighting, according to UNESCO, the UN cultural agency
