five Muslim Contributions to modern society
The Muslim inaugural Award for Excellence (MAX), to be held in Toronto, Canada, March 24, is an initiative to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of Canadian Muslims. Inspired by the age of Islamic gold MAX Gala will honor and motivate performance remarkable contemporary Muslims in Canada.

Islamic history is full of pioneering discoveries and inventions, many of which are rooted in modern society, such as:
public libraries
During the first decades of Islam, mosques acted as centers of intellectual discourse throughout the Muslim lands. They are not only places of worship but also housed libraries full of books on religion, philosophy and science. These libraries were open to the masses and not just the ruling and intellectual elite, as was common practice then.
Surgical Tools
The largest Muslim surgeon of the 10th century, Qasim al Zahrawi, described as the father of surgery, invented many surgical tools still used in modern medicine, including the scalpel, the surgical needle and surgical scissors. He also discovered catgut as a reliable material to administer internal stitches as it can be absorbed by the body, which prevents the necessity of a second surgical operation to remove them.
Algebra
The study of algebra flourished during the Islamic Golden Age in the purse of al-Khwarizmi mathematician. The word algebra is derived from "al-Jabr", an operation he used to solve quadratic equations.
Optics
In the 11th century, the scholar Ibn Haytham overthrew the old ideas of how our eyes see. Thanks to the systematic reason and experience, Ibn Haytham discovered that light is not emitted from the eye itself, but in fact is reflected by an object and enters the eye.
Coffee
Coffee beans are from Ethiopia, but Muslim Arabs developed the drink we know as coffee in the 15th century in Yemen where they exchanged with the Ethiopians
