Terrorism, a product of extremist ideology
Cairo: The grand imam of Al Azhar University in Egypt, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb called for a reform of religious teachings to fight against spread of extremism in the name of Islam. He said a bad historical interpretation of the Koran led to intolerant interpretations of Islam. Speaking at an anti-terrorism conference, he condemned terrorism at the opening of a three-day forum in Mecca. In his speech, he linked extremism to "misinterpretation" of the Koran and the life of Prophet Muhammad. Saudi king Salman said that terrorism was a "threat to our nation and the Muslim world," in a statement read at the conference. "Terrorism is a scourge that is the product of extremist ideology," he added. The conference, attended by senior clerics throughout the Muslim world, focused on Islam and the fight against terrorism
