Brunei to introduce Sharia Criminal Law
Bandar Seri Begawan ::. Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei announced that a new Sharia penal law which could include sanctions such as amputation for theft and stoning for adultery will be applied in six months.The Sultan said in a speech that the penal code of Sharia would applied only to Muslims. "By the grace of Allah, with the entry into force of this law, our duty to Allah is to be accomplished," he said at a legal conference in the capital of Brunei. Islamic Shariah court Brunei had already handled the family-related disputes mainly. But the new criminal Code of Sharia has been under consideration for many years. Nearly 70 percent of people of Brunei are Malay Muslims, while about 15 percent are non-Muslims. Brunei ethnic Chinese already has a dual system combining the civil courts based on UK law as the sultanate was a British protectorate until 1984, and the courts in line with the Sharia marriage, the legacy of handling, and other key issues low. in his speech, the sultan seemed to be trying to allay international concerns, saying the change of sharia "does not change our policy not as a member ... . family of nations "
