World Council of Churches Statement on the current situation in Mosul, Iraq
The World Council of Churches following with great concern the tragic developments in the situation in Iraq. "We are deeply shocked and upset by the recent events in Mosul, where hundreds of thousands of people fled the second largest city in Iraq because of violence and raids by the" Islamic State "terrorist group formerly known as the "Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham" (ISIS). This radical group imposes its terror on the entire population, specifically targeting minority groups, including Christians, who remained firm in the city after several waves of displacement.
of the 500,000 people who have left Mosul and the region, there are about 10,000 Christians were displaced and fled to neighboring Kurdish areas, as well as thousands of other religious and ethnic minorities and many opponents of the regime of terror imposed by ISIS.
reports from credible media and other accounts received from the bishops of Mosul and the neighboring villages in the Nineveh plain confirm that Mosul was virtually emptied of its Christian population . Christians in this city have maintained a continuous presence since the dawn of Christianity. We also mourn with those who lost their innocent loved ones in the military offensive, and we pray for a speedy recovery to the injured "
