clerics of Muslims in East Africa Pledge to fight against extremism
Kwale (Kenya): About 300 Muslim scholars and the East African countries of imams said they join their respective governments in the fight against terrorism. Sufi scholars, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Ethiopia, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, have pledged to fight against extremist teachings and terrorist activities after meeting for two days at a conference in the coastal county of Kenya Kwale. Somali scholar based in US Mohamud Elmi said that there must be a counter narrative to combat extremist views in schools. "There are questions that help people to be misled. For example, if they do not get a job, social justice, they must get a good education, the program must be corrected and removed from doctrines that believes in extremism, "said Elmi. "We have set up a religious program that supports people of different faiths and values," he added. Elmi called on Muslims in the region to work with their governments to squash terrorism, which claimed the lives of thousands in Somalia and neighboring countries.
